The Relationship Between God and His Angels

Angels have transfixed human fascination for centuries, depicted in numerous stories as beautiful, winged beings appearing at pivotal moments. From guiding infants in cradles to intervening in near-tragic incidents, angels are portrayed as miraculous and mysterious entities of divine intervention.

The Bible furnishes a rich and nuanced portrayal of angels, describing them as genderless spiritual entities created by God before humanity and potentially before the universe itself. The term “angel” means “messenger,” a name encompassing various orders such as seraphim, cherubim, and ministering spirits. Contrary to what many people assume, the cherubim and seraphim are the only angels described to have wings. These beings are not subject to laws like gravity, nor involved in the typical processes of humans, nor do they marry, reproduce, or die.

36 Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the resurrection.”

-Luke 20:36

God created angels to carry out specific duties in God’s divine plan. Often acting as messengers, warriors, or agents of praise. That being said, they are not to be mistaken as robotic, soulless entities. Angels demonstrate intelligence and emotional capacity. They are seen conversing, celebrating God’s greatness, and fulfilling missions. In Revelation, angels worship God in powerful declarations of adoration and praise. They emphasize their reverence for His divinity.

In the Bible, angels are mentioned nearly 200 times throughout the Old and New Testaments. These beings play a vital role in prophecy and end-times events, underscoring their integral part in God’s plan.

However, despite their importance, angels are fundamentally different from humans. The Bible shows that some angels remained loyal to God. However, some rebelled, falling from grace to become agents of Satan.

“4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;”

-2 Peter 2:4

This raises many intriguing questions about God’s relationship with the angels. While they executed His will, did God seek a more profound connection with them?

One can say that the relationship between God and angels is comparable to that between a king and His servants. Angels, though intelligent and driven with purpose, are beings created to fulfill specific roles. While serving God faithfully, they don’t involve themselves in the deep, relational communication He seeks with humans.

Keith A. Thomas Jr., in his book Sacrificial Lambs, portrays an enlightening story that delves into the unique relationship between God and his angel and God and man. The novel also tests ordinary men when they are put up against evil, with the premise dating back long before Genesis, when a secret experiment was conducted in Heaven. This experiment combined a reptilian humanoid’s DNA with an angel’s celestial chemistry. It had gone terribly wrong, and now the fate of Vatican City depends on a young angel named Darr. A pistol-packing pope with a dirty conscience, and a few ragtag cardinals with their own baggage. United under the banner of righteousness. They must battle a host of mystical creatures and seal off an ancient gateway if they wish to prevent the newly escaped nemesis from cloning a hybrid army capable of Biblical destruction.
