How Can Homeowners Claim Solar Panel Subsidies for Affordable Energy?

The sun provides warmth and light as well as a source of clean, renewable energy. The photovoltaic process is how sunlight, using photovoltaic technology (PV), can be converted into electricity. Solar energy is becoming more popular with homeowners and businesses thanks to government incentives.

Solar power systems are rapidly becoming more popular as the government launches programs to encourage the switch from conventional energy sources.

Solar systems for home are now affordable and profitable thanks to the simplified roof solar subsidy scheme. Installing solar PV plants in rooftops, open areas, or on buildings can significantly reduce electricity costs for homeowners, businesses and institutions.

The Versatility of Solar Energy Systems

Solar energy can be used in many different settings. It is not limited to homes. Solar energy can be used in many different places, including schools, hospitals, cold-storage facilities, sheds and government buildings.

Solar energy is a very profitable source of energy if your property has a load greater than 1kW. Solar systems can be paid for by the savings in monthly electricity bills. This allows homeowners and business owners to recover their initial costs within 6-8 years. These systems can provide free electricity up to 25-years after installation.

Solar Panel System Installation and Subsidy

The government provides subsidies to lower the cost of residential solar panel systems. Under the PM Surye Ghar Yojna, households can claim a Solar Subsidy per kilowatt of installed solar power. This program is aimed at residential consumers and housing associations, providing significant cost savings.

Installing a solar panel and claiming the subsidy is a multi-step process.

  • Registration: To apply for a rooftop solar subsidy, homeowners must register at the National Portal for Rooftop Solar. This portal allows users track the entire subsidy application process from submission to approval.
  • Document Submittal: The applicant must submit all relevant documentation including details of the bank account for payment of subsidies and information regarding rooftop solar system installations.
  • Technical feasibility approval: the application is sent to the local DISCOM for review and approval. This is usually granted within 15 days.
  • Vendor selection: The homeowner must select a solar energy vendor who is registered, accredited and approved by their local DISCOM. Solar panels and inverters must be certified and meet certain standards.
  • Application for Net Metering: After installing the solar system, homeowners are required to apply for net-metering via the same national portal. The excess electricity produced by solar panels can be sent to the grid to further reduce energy costs.
  • Final Approval: The installation will be inspected and a commissioning certification issued by DISCOM. The homeowner can receive the subsidy once the installation is approved.
  • Subsidy Payment: The subsidy amount will be transferred to the homeowner’s account after receiving the commissioning certificates within 30 days.

What will a solar inverter cost in 2024?

The solar inverter—which turns the direct current (DC) generated by solar panels into alternating current (AC)—used by most home appliances—is a fundamental part of any solar power system. With Solar Inverter Price in India ranging from ₹6 to ₹20 per watt depending on technology (off-grid, grid-tied, or microinverter), solar inverters make around 25–30% of the entire system cost.

Since it greatly affects the whole efficiency and long-term performance of the solar system, homeowners must choose the appropriate kind of inverter for their configuration. By optimizing solar panel output, a well-selected inverter not only guarantees best energy conversion but also increases the return on investment.

Future Outlook for Solar Energy

The future is promising despite the slow adoption of solar power systems in the residential sector. This was partly due to lack of awareness. The adoption of rooftop solar panels is expected to rise as more people learn about the benefits solar power offers and are aware of the subsidies available. Solar energy will become more affordable as subsidies are distributed better.
