Different Types of Injection Pumps

Measured fluid injections into a reservoir or production system are the purpose of injection pumps. They are frequently used in automobiles to pump gasoline into the engine cylinders.  Positive displacement pumps, or injection pumps, transport fluids by use of expanding and contracting cavities. Various Types of Injection Pumps

Diesel engine injection pumps run at extremely high pressures and are indirectly powered by the crankshaft using gears or chains. The engine’s timing belt drives a diesel fuel injection pump, supplying fuel to the engine just before the peak of the cylinder’s compression stroke. Fuel is delivered to the carburetor or fuel injection system using this kind of fuel injection pump. In the event of an accident or when it detects no oil pressure in the engine, the built-in safety logic of an electronic fuel injection pump system will cause the pump to shut down. 

  1. Common rail pump operating at high-pressure

The design of a high-pressure common rail pump differs slightly from that of an inline and rotational injection pump. This pump is a high-pressure circuit system due to its unique design.

  • The high-pressure common rail pump is made with one or two outlets, an inlet, and rotating pistols. The outlets are linked to a rail in the design, which provides the system with pressure. Therefore, with the common rail pump, the rail manages the pressure while the ECU handles the fuel distribution, in contrast to the inline or rotational pump, which covers the amount of pressure applied.
  • The primary responsibility of the standard rail pump is to maintain the highest possible fuel pressure, which allows the fuel to atomize when the ECU opens the injector. 
  1. Rotating fuel injection pump distributor

A rotary pump features a more compact, circular form, as the name would imply. These pumps, which date back to the first diesel engine applications, are regarded as being extremely robust and sustainable.

The injection system of the distributor pump is the primary feature. When all of the fuel is directed into each chamber and around each pump shaft by the plunger, the pump functions. The plunger will force gasoline into the chamber and the ignition timing as soon as the pump shaft revolves.

Also, a variety of sensors use electrical control to operate this kind of pump. This comprises of:

  • An electronic control unit
  • An actuator

The control unit is in charge of determining the ideal engine operating condition levels and communicating those values to the actuator. The actuator then uses the signals it gets from the control unit to adjust the timing and volume of fuel injected. 

  1. Continuous pump

The newest kind of diesel engine injection pump is the continuous pump. Because of its efficiency and longevity, it’s perhaps the most applicable and commonly used one currently. This pump is typically used with direct injection systems.

  • Of all the pumps, the continuous pump is the smallest and has the most straightforward design. This is because there aren’t many uses for this specific pump. Increasing fuel pressure steadily at high pressure and generating between 30,000 and 40,000 PSI is its main duty. 
  • Moreover, this kind of pump is in charge of controlling the volume and timing of gasoline spray. Fuel will be suppressed and pressure will be maintained at the applied limit by the pump.
  • The fuel can enter the combustion chamber while flowing rearward because of the opening created by the plunger’s back-and-forth motion. But moving forward exerts enough effort to compel the air inside the chamber to contract, producing heat. Because this heat is contained in an area that is fast getting smaller, pressure and temperature rise, practically instantly resulting in ignite. 
  1. Fuel pump with inline injection (Jerk)

Inline injection pumps feature straight output lines as opposed to rotary pumps’ curved ones. The number of fuel pressure mechanisms on this kind of pump matches that of the engine cylinders. The majority of medium-to-large-sized automobiles and construction equipment use inline injection pumps. Also, Diesel fuel injector testing can be used to test the functioning of this equipment.
